COMMUNION MEDITATION: How do you fix this?

It isn’t just the clumsy among us who have dropped a smartphone or laptop computer and found themselves looking at a cracked screen or an electronic device that won’t boot up.

Most of us have had those drops, praying throughout the reach to pick up the device that we haven’t broken it.

Lots of us weren’t so fortunate!

How do you fix broken phones and other electronics?

If you live in the Point Loma area of San Diego, you might take it to a shop named for just your need: “uBreakiFix.”

What a great idea for a business!

It seems like most of us, at some time, will break one of our electronic devices — that’s easy! — but we won’t know how to fix it. We need someone who is skilled and capable at fixing what we break.

It’s not just electronics that we’re good at cracking and otherwise doing damage to. We human beings have so battered our lives with sin that we’ve broken them. And we aren’t capable of fixing them.

How do you fix this?

You and I can’t, but God through Christ can.

Communion reminds us how we have broken ourselves, and need a divine repair person. It reminds us that fixing our problem required that Jesus Christ himself be broken — His body beaten and pierced, His blood shed — so that we could have a “fix” for our problem …

“But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all,” Isaiah 53:5-6.
