In honor of our veterans …

Just like so many of the things that function unseen and quietly in the backgrounds of our lives to provide us with the quality of lifestyles we enjoy, we rely on the men and women serving in our nation’s branches of the military on a daily basis far more than we realize.

Just remove the presence of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines from posts here and abroad, and our nation would be a very different place under the domination of very different sources.

We can count on our service personnel to keep us free and safe.

That reminds me of a story of a detail of soldiers who came under heavy enemy fire. One of the soldiers attempted to cross an open area and was shot down. His best friend immediately started to jump up and run out after him, but his sergeant grabbed his arm and said, “Don’t be crazy! You run out there and you’ll just get yourself shot as well! I’m not going to lose two men.”

The sergeant had hardly finished his sentence when the man wrenched his arm free and ran after his buddy. Just as he reached his friend, he, also, was shot down by the enemy. As the man lay dying, the last words he heard was that of his friend …

“I knew you would come.”

When our nation is threatened and our freedom imperiled, we can count on the men and women of the United States armed forces to defend our liberty. Many have done so by giving the ultimate sacrifice of their lives.

To all of the men and women who have donned a uniform and served our great nation, we say thank you for your sacrifice of service to our country. As we observe Veteran’s Day today, may you be blessed by the respect and support of a grateful nation.

May God bless you and protect you!
