BOOK REVIEW: A good exploration of how to live supernaturally …

There are some books with titles that make you guess endlessly at what the content could possibly be about. But the title of Jared Wilson’s new book tells all about its message – “Supernatural Power for Everyday People” (published by Nelson Books).

At a time when the church in the West appears, at best, to be spiritually anemic, Wilson provides wise biblical insight into why Christians live such weak lives when the Holy Spirit himself lives within them.

Wilson begins: “I am firmly convinced that too many Christians spend most of their lives trying to carry out their everyday routines in their own strength.”

The problem of our weakness isn’t rooted in God, but in us!

“When Christians live sluggish Christian lives, it’s not because they don’t have enough of God but because they have too much of themselves. Because, in actuality, it is impossible for any true Christian not to have enough of God,” Wilson claims, and then digs deeper …

“If you are a Christian — that is, if you are someone who has repented of your sins and placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation — God’s presence in your life is guaranteed. His love is always over you, his Son in heaven is always interceding for you, and his Spirit has taken up residence in your soul to give you the power required for every need you have. This is God’s honest truth. And yet too many of us live weak, pitiful Christian lives.”

If that is God’s honest truth, then WHY do so many Christians live such weak, pitiful lives? And what can be done to change that? The answers to those two questions is what the rest of the book is about.

“If we want to participate in the truly supernatural life in this earthly world, we have to stop looking for earthly solutions to our problems,” Wilson adds.

That means we need to get serious about knowing and being in relationship with the Holy Spirit. Wilson does a concise and able job of helping his readers better understand the person and work of the Holy Spirit, and how He how comes into our lives to provide us with all the power we need for all that our lives will contain. Yet, for the average Christian, the Holy Spirit is largely a stranger.

Change that, and your life will be transformed!

Wilson helps his readers understand how to get to know and be in relationship with the Holy Spirit, and how to be empowered by him. To make the biblical insights taught easy to understand, the author introduces us to “Bill,” a character who lives a fairly mundane, lukewarm, powerless Christian life. But that changes, and you’ll see how as you work your way through the book, covering such topics as experiencing the Spirit’s conviction and His presence, to experiencing His guidance, His voice, His strength, and other important aspects of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

This is a good book to help anyone who acknowledges they’re living a “weak, pitiful” Christian life to understand the empowered life God wants us to live, and how to realize that extraordinary life through the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
