Skipping the commercials?

“Watch what you want to watch, when you want to watch it” is the concept of hulu.com, a website where you can watch a host of television shows and movies you select from a variety of categories.

The site is free, so that means viewers are subjected to a few commercials when watching their selections. What I found interesting a few times I accessed the site was, when a commercial was supposed to come on what appeared instead was a notice saying there was an error and hulu was unable to show the commercial, AND if the error continues, please contact customer support so the error could be corrected.

When I first saw the notice, I actually had to read it for a second time.

Then I laughed. Out loud.

Does hulu really expect viewers to complain when they can’t watch commercials? It isn’t viewers choosing to see the commercials, it’s hulu showing the commercials to generate revenue. The viewer doesn’t want the message (commercial), just the freebie (the show they selected).
When I thought about that situation, I thought that’s often how we see people respond to God. Many aren’t interested in His message, just the “freebie” of salvation.

Many aren’t interested in denying themselves and daily taking up their own crosses in order to actually follow Christ (Luke 9:23). Many aren’t interested in dedicating themselves to pursuing a pure life, free of sin, in service to the Savior. Many simply aren’t interested in the realities of the Christian life, they just want free salvation, free grace, and freedom to do as they please.

But unlike hulu, the Christian is listening for the message, and applying it: “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow me,” John 10:27.

When it comes to Christ, are you tuning in to the message, or looking for a freebie?
