One step to a better life …

How can you get the most out of life?

How can you have the best life possible?

A casual glance at popular publications reveal how we are constantly looking for a “secret” to a better life, a richer life, a more fulfilling life, a happy life. How can you have the best life possible?

The “secret” is simple: Read the Bible, then live out — to God’s glory — what it teaches.

Irvin Gordon is no stranger to finding the secret to getting the most out of something, except in his case it’s a car. Melkorka Licea, a writer for the New York Post, tells Gordon’s story …

A Long Islander’s revered red Volvo — known for having racked up more than 3 million miles — is still hitting the pavement in mint condition.

Irvin Gordon says he has cranked out another 273,895 miles in his 1966 P1800 convertible since he hit the triple-million mark in September 2013 — with no signs of stopping.

Understandably, many find it hard to believe that Gordon has driven his Volvo as many miles as it would take to go around the Earth 126 times.

Says Gordon: “Everybody says, ‘It’s not possible,’ The biggest secret is as simple as reading the owner’s manual. Most people just tuck it under the kitchen sink or in the glove compartment and never look at it. You gotta make the effort. When it’s time for the oil change you do it — not just talk about it.”

People often scoff at the suggestion that the Bible is like an owner’s manual, but that comparison isn’t far off. God created us, and He has revealed Himself and His will for us through scripture – the Bible. If we don’t just tuck it away, but pay attention to it and apply it fully to our lives, we can have the best life possible for us. The psalmist says the same thing …

“Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do,” Psalm 1:1-3.

Our lives become what God intends when we listen to what He has to say to us through His Word. Taking a random passage of scripture, just look at how loaded with instruction and wisdom for living the Bible is:

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality,” Romans 12:9-13.

Let’s slow down our reading and look back at that passage to see how full it is with direction for our lives …

  • Don’t pretend to love others, really love them.
  • Hate what is wrong.
  • Hold tightly to what is good.
  • Love each other with genuine affection.
  • Delight in honoring each other.
  • Never be lazy.
  • Work hard.
  • Serve the Lord enthusiastically.
  • Rejoice in our confident hope.
  • Be patient in trouble.
  • Keep on praying.
  • When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them.
  • Always be eager to practice hospitality.
  • There is SO MUCH insight and wisdom flowing from just that small passage of scriptures that we could meditate on these things, day and night, for a long time! Just imagine how much better our lives could be if we actually fully applied all of this instruction to our lives!

That’s just from a few verses out of the Book of Romans!

How can you have a better life? Be a serious student of the Bible. Read it and study it every single day, and then be diligent to put into the practice of living life all that the Word of God instructs and teaches. By doing so, life will be as full and fulfilling as it possibly can be. You’ll get the most mileage out of life by living out God’s Word, to His glory, every day.
