BOOK REVIEW: This might be the breakthrough for your child’s (or your) ADHD …

I don’t know Dr. James Greenblatt, but his new book might offer you the natural breakthrough to alleviating your child’s (or your) ADHD that you’ve been praying for.

The book is titled, “Finally Focused” with a long subtitle: “The Breakthrough Natural Treatment Plan for ADHD that Restores Attention, Minimizes Hyperactivity, Helps Eliminate Drug Side Effects” (published by Harmony Books). There’s a lot of promise in a title like that!

First, a snippet about the man making such claims …

James Greenblatt, M.D., is board-certified in both child and adult psychiatry, and has treated thousands of children and adults with ADHD over the past thirty years using a unique science-based approach that combines both natural and medical therapeutics …

The good doctor, along with his co-author, Bill Gottleib, CHC (whose only role, I assume, was helping in the actual writing of the book, as the “voice” of the author is always that of Dr. Greenblatt) encourages you throughout the book that he really does know what he’s talking about because he has more than 30 years of SUCCESSFULLY treating patients with ADHD with great results. Let me say, such experience and skill that consistently renders excellent outcomes is worth giving attention to! And so Dr. Greenblatt begins at the beginning …

“I’ve gained my confidence from three decades as a child psychiatrist and an integrative psychiatrist, treating thousands of children and adolescents with ADHD. During those thirty years, I’ve learned this essential fact about the disorder: ADHD is not a ‘behavior problem.’ ADHD is a medical disorder, in which genetic, neurological, nutritional, and environmental factors imbalance the brain, causing imbalanced behavior.”

What impresses me about Dr. Greenblatt is his approach to working with an ADHD patient: “As an integrative psychiatrist, I don’t limit myself to prescribing medications to control the symptoms of ADHD. I look for and detect the underlying causes of the disorder and I address those causes, using natural treatments first and medications only when necessary. And even if I do prescribe an ADHD drug, I do so in conjunction with powerful natural treatments that give patients with ADHD relief from medication side effects.”

One more point Dr. Greenblatt thought important to make at the beginning of his book:

The most important point about ADHD: it is NOT a disease. It is a disorder or syndrome, which are both ways to label a collection of symptoms.

All the information Dr. Greenblatt then goes on to share isn’t based solely on his more than three decades of successfully treating patients, but also on a plethora of scientific research, much of which he shares in every chapter as evidence to substantiate his statements and recommendations.

“… in the mid-90s, the causes of ADHD became the focus of serious scientific research, with more than ten thousand scientific papers on ADHD generated in the last two decades. And that new research has firmly established ADHD as a genetic, neurological, nutritional, and environmental disorder, in which an imbalanced brain triggers imbalanced behavior.”

With that disclaimer in place, Dr. Greenblatt uses the remainder of the book as a hands-on, practical tool for parents to learn about the potential causes of their children’s (or their own) ADHD, and provides specific “prescriptions” for how to treat those causes …

Dr. Greenblatt writes, “I’ve written Finally Focused like a book-length prescription that provides all the background information and practical guidelines you need to confidently treat your ADHD child or yourself. This book and your efforts will be enough to effectively relieve the symptoms of ADHD. Think of Finally Focused as a manual for the ADHD brain, teaching you how to balance it, thereby controlling imbalanced, counter-productive behaviors of all kinds.”

Each chapter comes with “step-by-step action plans” that are easy to understand and implement, and Dr. Greenblatt reassures his readers they can always implement his recommendations in conjunction with consultations with their own physicians.

Harnessing proven skill and decades of successful outcomes with the insights of volumes of scientific research — along with a preference and commitment to treating ADHD naturally when at all possible — this book could be the guide you’ve needed to treat your children or yourself effectively so that ADHD will finally be alleviated.

It could be that reading this book, and implementing the “prescriptions” it provides, could result in your child (or yourself) being … finally focused! You’ll never know unless you try.
