Our relationship with God fades when we allow this to happen …

When we lose our awe of God and allow Him to become ordinary in our lives, our relationship with Him fades quickly.

When we don’t start our days with God, and don’t make time for Him, He becomes as ordinary as everyone else and everything else we cram into our overly busy lives. We actually lose our awe for God, kind of like a story told by Mikey’s Funnies about a pet owner who had lost his amazement about the fact his dog could talk:

A guy sees a sign in front of a house: “Talking Dog for Sale.” He rings the doorbell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard.

The guy goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there.

    “You talk?” he asks.

    “Yep,” the mutt replies.

    “So, what’s your story?”

The mutt looks up and says, “Well, I discovered my gift of talking pretty young, and I wanted to help the government. So, I told the CIA about my gift; in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.”

The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, “Ten dollars.”

The guy says, “This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?”

The owner replies, “He’s a big liar. He didn’t do any of that stuff.”

God has never lied and never will. His track record is perfect, in fact He is our very source for truth, and He is worthy of our being in awe of Him …

“For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed,” Deuteronomy 10:17.

Yet, most of us live as if being able to have an intimate and personal relationship with such an awesome God is as ordinary as owning a dog … one that can’t talk.

Have you lost your awe for God? Or does being able to come into His presence at any time as an adopted child whom He loves still amaze you?
