Called on the carpet …

It’s interesting how some people think that settling down into the seat of a car makes them invisible to all other human beings outside their vehicle.

That’s because some of the behaviors taken on while sitting at a red light in a car can be hilarious … or worse. From talking to themselves, to singing and “dancing” in their seats, to putting on make-up, changing clothes, “fixing” their hair, eating, brushing their teeth, arguing and more, people in cars often become oblivious to the fact people outside their cars can see them.

I think sometimes we have a very similar attitude with our Lord.

We tend to think He can’t – or doesn’t – see how we behave until we take notice of Him. But He sees everything, all the time …

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable,” Hebrews 4:13.

Jesus certainly noted the behavior of people, and one day He bluntly called out some of them regarding their behavior:

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?” Luke 6:46.

There’s all kinds of excuses for such behavior, but not a single acceptable reason.

Did you notice what Jesus is calling out? Not that people were calling Him rabbi, or teacher, or friend, or by His name. He pointedly questions them about their calling Him Lord but not living a life that demonstrated He was, indeed, Lord of their lives.

Jesus is more than our Savior, He is also our Lord, meaning Master, the One with supreme authority to whom we submit the entirety of our lives. A Lord reigns and rules over His subjects. And so Jesus asks:

“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?”

You can’t fool Jesus, He can see beyond the exterior of your life (your behavior), all the way to your mind and heart. He sees it all as clearly as if you were “dancing” in your car at a red light.

Just as these people Jesus was calling on the carpet, if you’re calling Him “Lord” but not submitting to and serving Him as the Lord of your life, then your life is in contradiction to your words.

How are you going to reconcile that?
