The BIG question being asked about church is EASY to answer …

For much of the past year, church leaders — and especially those promoting themselves as church leadership “gurus” — have asked and examined the question of whether “digital” or “online only” church is good enough for Christians, whether we really need to go back to gathering in-person.

Easy question!

No it isn’t, and yes we do!

It’s just that simple.

Okay, let’s look at why.

In spite of the enormous error so many church leaders make of insisting on constantly referring to the church as a “community,” it is better biblically defined as a FAMILY (God’s family) or as a BODY (the body of Christ). “Family” is very intimate, so intimate that it comprises as single “body” that each person is a part of — that’s an intimacy that “community” in no way comes close to or can capture.

And neither can “online only” church.

Imagine what you would lose if your relationship with your siblings — your biological brothers and sisters — was permanently limited to Face Time calls ONLY. That would be such a massive relational loss! It’s the same loss giving up meeting in person would be in favor of keeping church online only.

The good news is we can return to meeting in-person AND keeping what is beneficial about connecting online.

You can never have in an online-only setting the intimacy in the local church that is demonstrated among the believers in Acts 2 and Acts 4. But that doesn’t mean that sometimes some delivery of “content” and some meetings can’t be done as well or better via online connections.

So why not do both?

Let’s make the “new normal” for the church all the best of being together in person, AND using technology well and wisely as a tool in accomplishing the mission of the church.

The question wrestled with for so long now isn’t hard to answer, so don’t make it any harder than it is.
