A psalm of thanksgiving for Thanksgiving …

Did you ever read those Family Circus cartoons?

One of those many insightful and funny cartoons featured little Billy at the grocery store with his mother, who was shopping for a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

Thinking about this, Billy said to his mother, “Thanksgiving should come AFTER Christmas, then we’d have more things to be thankful for.”

I get how a child could think that, but it’s not quite accurate. What we have to be thankful to God for at any given time is immense, and we even have a “psalm of thanksgiving” to help remind us:

“Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation,” Psalm 100:1-5.

Tucked into this psalm of thanksgiving are reasons for giving thanks. Reasons to meditate on as we make our way to Thanksgiving Day.
