For some people, all the evidence in the world doesn’t matter …

One of the most dangerous positions to park yourself in is the situation of being unwilling to see beyond what you believe.

Yes, it is possible to believe something so strongly that even when great — even incredible — evidence is directly before your eyes, you still doubt.

Today, we can laugh at those who doubted some things that are ordinary for us, like:

In 1840 – “Anyone traveling at the speed of thirty miles per hour would surely suffocate.”

In 1878 – “Electric lights are unworthy of serious attention.”

In 1901 – “No possible combination can be united into a practical machine by which men shall fly.”

In 1926 – (from a scientist) “This foolish idea of shooting at the moon is basically impossible.”

And in 1930 – (another scientist) “To harness the energy locked up in matter is impossible.”

But what if you had overwhelming evidence right in front of you to challenge something you believe deeply — would that erase all doubt?

It didn’t for some of Jesus’ followers.

After His resurrection, hundreds of people witnessed the fact that Jesus was, indeed, alive and well! His own resurrection from the dead was the greatest evidence of Jesus being who He had claimed He was. Jesus had, on multiple occasions, explained in some detail to His disciples what would happen to Him when He arrived in Jerusalem, including both his crucifixion and His resurrection three days after His death. Now, His being alive in front of them was undeniable proof that what He told them would happen had, indeed, come to pass. But then we read this:

“Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him — but some of them doubted!” Matthew 28:16.

For some people, all the evidence in the world doesn’t matter because they cannot (won’t) see past what they believe.

That was the issue with some of Jesus’ followers who stood in His presence just days after His resurrection.

How about you — can you see past what you believe to the truth that is Jesus Christ?
