The t-shirt …

A couple nights ago, I saw a guy working out in my local gym wearing a t-shirt with “Mr. Clutch” boldly emblazoned across the front.

I wondered, “Who’s Mr. Clutch?”

Who’s the first person you think of when you hear, “Mr. Clutch”?

Do you immediately think of an incredible athlete who always seems to come through for your favorite team in “clutch” situations?

Or maybe you think of a friend who has always come through with encouragement, support, or much needed help in “clutch” situations in your life.

Maybe the guy wearing the shirt was proclaiming himself to be “Mr. Clutch,” seeing himself as the guy who can always be counted on.

In life:

… We all need a friend who is Mr. Clutch, someone we can count on to have our backs when times are difficult.

“Putting confidence in an unreliable person in times of trouble is like chewing with a broken tooth or walking on a lame foot,” Proverbs 25:19.

“A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need,” Proverbs 17:17.

… At times, we need to be Mr. Clutch for others in our lives who are counting on our love and support for them.

“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love,” Galatians 5:13.

… And every one of us need — more than anything or anyone else — a deep, personal, vital relationship with the original Mr. Clutch — Jesus Christ — who came through for all of us when we we utterly hopeless and lost:

“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God,” Romans 5:6-11.
